Space Maintainer: what to know

A space maintainer holds selected space after early loss of a baby tooth. It does not replace all tooth functions or guarantee later alignment.

When might it be needed?

Premature tooth loss when development, eruption stage and available space indicate benefit.

The choice follows an examination. Symptoms alone cannot identify the right treatment.

Inside the treatment

Space Maintainer · illustrated steps

See the main stages of care. Illustrations explain the approach; your treatment is planned after an individual assessment.

The main treatment stages

01 · Assess early tooth loss

The gap, eruption stage, bite and remaining teeth are assessed to decide whether space maintenance is needed.

02 · Fit a suitable appliance

An appropriate fixed or removable appliance is fitted. A band-and-loop example is illustrated.

03 · Monitor eruption and hygiene

Reviews check cleaning, fit and the developing permanent tooth. Removal or adjustment is planned when indicated.

YOUR QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Frequently asked questions

Does every lost baby tooth need one?

No. Timing, tooth position, crowding and successor development affect the decision.

What if it becomes loose?

Contact the clinic promptly. Do not bend or glue it back yourself.

Does a space maintainer straighten teeth?

Its main purpose is to preserve selected space. It does not correct every alignment or bite problem.

Is the appliance fixed or removable?

Either may be used. The missing tooth, eruption stage, hygiene and cooperation determine the design.

How long does a child wear it?

There is no fixed duration for everyone. Eruption and development are checked before adjustment or removal.

Can my child eat normally?

Follow the appliance-specific food advice. Sticky or hard foods may loosen or damage some designs.

How should it be cleaned?

Clean around the appliance and supporting teeth as demonstrated. Parents should help where needed.

Does it need review even if it feels fine?

Yes. Fit, hygiene, tooth eruption and possible interference need monitoring as the child grows.
