YOUR TREATMENT GUIDE

What is direct pulp capping?

A protective material is placed over a suitable exposed pulp, the living tissue inside a tooth. A final filling seals the cavity above it.

When is it considered?

  • A small, clean pulp exposure, such as a pinpoint opening under 1 mm.
  • The pulp is still living and the tissue findings support preservation.
  • Bleeding can be controlled and the tooth can be properly restored.

Exposure size alone does not decide suitability; the cause and condition of the pulp also matter.

Why preserve the pulp?

The aim is to keep suitable living tissue instead of removing all the pulp. If preservation is unsuitable, pulpotomy or root canal treatment may be needed.

Inside the treatment

Direct Pulp Capping · illustrated steps

Three stages of a carefully selected pulp-preservation treatment. The exact approach follows the dentist’s clinical assessment.

01 · Assess and isolate

We examine the tooth, isolate it from saliva and assess the exposed pulp. Symptoms, tissue condition and bleeding control help guide the choice.

02 · Protect the exposure

A suitable pulp-capping biomaterial is placed locally over the exposure. The aim is to preserve the living pulp; this material stays inside the prepared cavity.

03 · Restore and review

A well-sealed final filling or other suitable restoration protects the tooth above the capping material. Follow-up checks symptoms, the restoration and healing.

The capping material sits locally over the pulp exposure, beneath the final restoration.

Preserve the living pulp

Direct pulp capping aims to keep the pulp alive after a suitable exposure.

What to consider

Healing needs follow-up

Healing is not guaranteed. Review is essential to check how the tooth responds.

Case selection matters. Pulp preservation requires suitable living tissue. Pulpectomy here refers to baby teeth; the final column refers to permanent teeth. These are not interchangeable choices. Examination, X-rays and findings during treatment guide the plan. Retained pulp still needs to heal successfully.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR CHOICES

Filling, pulp treatment or root canal?

How is direct pulp capping different from a normal filling?

A dental filling repairs the damaged part of a tooth. Direct pulp capping adds a protective biomaterial directly over a suitable pulp exposure before the final filling seals the cavity. The pulp is the living tissue inside the tooth, often called the tooth nerve. The material goes inside the tooth; it is not a crown placed over it.

Why try to save the pulp instead of starting root canal treatment?

If the exposed tissue is suitable for healing, keeping it alive can avoid removing all the pulp. We check symptoms, tests, X-rays and the tissue during treatment. This is an option for selected teeth, not a promise that root canal treatment will never be needed.

When might another treatment be more suitable?

If more affected crown pulp must be removed, pulpotomy may be considered. If the pulp cannot be preserved, root canal treatment may be appropriate. A comfortable tooth still needs review; a strong final seal and follow-up are part of the treatment.

How we monitor healing after treatment

We arrange follow-up to review symptoms, check the restoration and assess pulp responses and X-rays where appropriate. Feeling comfortable alone does not confirm healing. Keep the restoration clean and intact, and contact us for spontaneous or worsening pain, swelling, biting pain or a broken filling.

YOUR QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Frequently asked questions

How is it different from indirect pulp capping?

Direct pulp capping covers exposed pulp. Indirect pulp capping aims to avoid exposing the pulp while managing deep decay.

Is it suitable after every injury?

No. Exposure history, contamination, symptoms and tissue findings affect the choice. Pulpotomy may be more appropriate in some injured teeth.

Will I definitely avoid root canal treatment?

No. Healing cannot be guaranteed. Root canal treatment remains an option if preservation is unsuitable or healing fails.

Will the tooth need a crown?

The remaining tooth structure and bite determine whether a dental filling or crown is appropriate.

Is pulp capping the same as a tooth cap?

No. A pulp cap is material placed inside the cavity over the exposed pulp. A crown covers a prepared tooth.

Can I avoid root canal treatment with a deep filling?

It depends on pulp health. We assess whether a filling alone, pulp capping or another treatment is appropriate.

How do you decide if this treatment is suitable?

We assess your tooth’s pulp health using your symptoms, examination, appropriate pulp-response tests and X-rays. Tissue findings and bleeding control during treatment also help us choose the approach.

How much does direct pulp capping cost in Mymensingh?

An estimate follows assessment and includes the planned pulp protection, restoration and reviews. A different treatment may be needed if findings change.
